Pipeline, arguably the most iconic surf spot on the planet, is a wave that embodies both beauty and brutality. Located on Oahu’s North Shore, this legendary break is capable of pulling off incredible disappearing acts, only to roar back to life with all its energy and beauty when the swell is just right. *The Wave’s Anatomy* Classic Pipe relies on two outer reefs to refract an approaching WNW-NW swell into a long wall finishing with a tapered peak that hits the inside reef. The wave breaks hard on the reef, holding a lot of energy in the lip, and is known for its distinct boils on the wave face. *The Challenges of Pipe* Despite being one of the best waves in the world, Pipeline’s ranking is often pulled down by the crowd and inconsistency that plagues it during many times of the year. The wave is prone to sand build-up along the inside reef, which can turn it into a hideous closeout. However, when the conditions are just right, Pipe is a queen of the surf world, offering an experience that’s hard to match. - Wave quality = 10 (x3) Ridiculously Good - Crowd = 3,1 Extremely heavy when it’s on. - Shoulder Burn = 6,3 Not a far paddle out, but there can be a lot of water moving around during solid swells, a lot of jockeying for position, and simply trying to get into the wave itself - Water Temp = 7,6 (x0,5) Year round warm water temperatures at Pipeline climb to their warmest in mid September. - Consistency = 6,6 The wave is prone to sand build-up along the inside reef, which can turn it into a hideous closeout. View from a photographers perspective at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. It’s known as the Deadliest Wave in the World because it’s sadly claimed the most lives. It’s extremely shallow with a lava rock reef with deep caverns running throughout.
