#Bare Root Trees

Bare root trees are often a cheaper way to get unique tree varieties but it’s important to make sure you set them up for success. In this case I am going into a pot but the same principles apply to planting in ground! It’s all about making sure you get good root contact with the soil! If you leave the roots in air they will die back and have nowhere to spread their roots! And if you are curious I bought 2 trees at the nursery a “Coffee Cake Persimmon” and a “Chocolate Persimmon” both which I am very much looking forward to sampling!

Bare root digging has started for the fall here on the nursery. Thanks to a couple early frosts things have gone dormant nicely. Over the next few weeks we will dig, grade, bundle and heel in our bare root stock so its ready to go nice and early in the spring. I just saved this tree before a disaster happened. That’s a girdling root. It wraps around the trunk or major roots and slowly strangles the tree as everything thickens. Water and nutrient flow gets restricted, the canopy starts to look “off”, growth stalls, and in bad cases the tree can fail without anyone realising the cause. Common signs to watch for: A tree that lags behind its neighbours, a swollen or pinched looking trunk at the base, roots circling in the planting hole, or the trunk disappearing straight into a tight root collar instead of flaring out naturally. Why it happens: Usually from pot bound seedlings, planting too deep, or a root that started circling early and never got corrected. What to do: Catch it early. Expose the root flare, inspect the collar, and remove or redirect the problem root before it becomes structural. Do it cleanly and don’t bury the collar again. This is the unsexy stuff that keeps an orchard producing.
