To get my art degree I’ve tried everything from oil painting to sculpture and arc welding…but I’ve never before done Batik. It’s a process of continually adding wax then dye then wax over and over to create layers then removing the wax at the end. The class was lead by an amazing art teacher friend of mine and showed a simplified way we could do it with students. We barely had an hour to do a process that takes 5x as long as that so it was just a quick experiment but I learned a lot and I definitely want to try it again! This time was supposed to be some bubbles turned grapes turned random shapes 😅 the wax tools (called a Tjanting) definitely takes some practice! What should I try to make next time? This was a Batik silk scarf that I made during a Natural Dye Workshop, which I attended back in June, run by Lesley and Sarah at Kinetika Studios. I designed it based on an earlier illustration I made of various dye plants, including Weld, which I also used to dye the fabric with. The drawing stage took me two full sessions to complete, due to the scope of my design. The scarf was then sent for final processing, off site, to remove the wax, and I finally got to see the finished result in August. #batiking #waxresistdyeing #naturaldyeing

What’s wrong with that shirt? Nothing - it’s halfway through the #batik process. It’s one of my fave #lifeisgood shirts and I have protected Jake and his #snowangel with #hotwax and made #snowflakes❄️ with hot wax too. Then #dyed it blue. #bluedye #dyeing Now I will get the wax removed and the waxed areas will be the original white so Jake will be making his Angel in the snow at night surrounded by falling snowflakes. Do you know about Batik? It’s the art of decorating cloth using wax and dye made on a fabric surface (such as cotton, silk, linen, rayon or hemp), but batik techniques can also be used on paper, wood, leather and even a ceramic surface. To make a batik, selected areas of the design are blocked out by applying hot wax over them, a dye is applied on top and the parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original colour. A simple batik may be just one layer of wax and one dye, but this process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated many times if necessary to create more elaborate and colourful designs. After the final dyeing the wax is removed (usually in hot water) and the cloth is ready for wearing or displaying. Contemporary batik, while owing much to the past, is markedly different from the more traditional and formal styles of the past. The artist may use a wide variety of techniques to apply the wax and the dyes: spraying, etching, discharging, cracking, marbling, and use all sorts of different tools: copper and wooden stamps, brushes, stencils.
