This is where to start on rollerskates ⬇️ These three simple things make a huge difference—incorporating them from the start will make skating easier, more fun and safer! 💡 1️⃣ How to Stand (Up) – Start on your knees and bring one foot up at a time to make sure your shoulders stay over your skates from the start. Keep a light bend in your knees at all times to stay agile, and remember: your shoulders should always be over your weight-bearing foot for balance and control. 2️⃣ How to Fall & Trust Your Gear – Falling is part of the process, and I highly recommend wearing protective gear in the beginning! Until your body builds muscle memory for safe falls, gear helps reduce injury risk. Practice getting low before hitting the ground and train your body to tuck in and fall forward. The more confident you are about falling safely, the more relaxed your skating will be! 3️⃣ How to Shift Weight & Skate Forward – First, practice shifting your weight from one foot to the other while standing still. Once that feels comfortable, start skating by pointing your heels in, toes out, shifting your weight onto one foot, and pushing off with the other. Speed is key🔑 For a beginner, the speed & pace may be a little slower than another skater. That’s okay! 👍🏼 When learning something new, I start slow too!!! But as you gain confidence, add in speed. Speed can help the momentum, balance & even spin rotations Here is the 🛼combo! -disco spin: a fun move that can be done forward like here, or backwards -heel-toe spins: start with one spin & add as you learn. Play with different ways to exit this combo too! Here I exited out of my spin backwards, but a nice dip is also fun! Or, keep the flow going with another move! . 4 Things New Skaters Need to Learn 📝 1. How to Skate Backwards: Bend & push your heels open then pull them together. Always look in the direction you’re going. 2. How to stop: Lean forward on your front skate & twist your back skate in. Slowly lean back. 3. Transitioning Forward to Backward: Lean on one skate & twist the other from the heel (or lift) to face the opposite direction, lean here then turn the other skate to follow. 4. Cross overs: Lean on one skate & lift the other to step to the side of the planted skate. Transfer weight, then lift the back skate & step to the side. Looking for a beginner skate class in KC?
