You aren't just lying there, you’re creating a rigid platform to move weight. ​Proper benching is about Total Body Tension. If your feet are dancing and your back is flat, you’re leaving gains on the table and putting your shoulders at risk. ​The 3 Bench Commandments: ​1. The Leg Drive: Don't just place your feet; drive them into the floor. This creates a stable base and transfers energy from the ground up through your core to the bar. 2. The Scapular Retraction: Pinch your shoulder blades together and tuck them into your back pockets. This creates a stable "shelf" and protects the delicate rotator cuff. 3. Bar Path: The most efficient bar Path for the bench Press is not a straight line but a diagnol one. Starting position should be over your shoulders. Incline Bench Press Stability Superset - this is a variation of the flat bench press one I posted prior. The concept here is the same... instead of changing weight (like a drop set) or bench angle (like a mechanical drop set), you will instead increase the stability of the exercise, allowing you to squeeze a few more reps out of basically the same muscle fibers. You'll start with an incline dumbbell bench press for 4-6 reps then when you approach failure, set them down and go right into incline barbell bench press with the same weight (doesn't have to be fully exact but should be very close). I like to do inclines with a "bottom start" setup in the power rack, pressing off the rails because I find it allows me to reset my shoulders into a better position to get the upper chest to work. You can absolutely do this one with a normal incline barbell bench press as well. I like this method a lot for putting more mechanical tension on muscle fibers in the same movement pattern with thes same load and basically extending the set without changing the weight or angle, like you do with other intensity techniques. You can also extend this to a machine incline press if you want to maximize stabilization and you're not in a crowded gym.
