My biggest pet peeve of taking care of orchids is not knowing how their roots are doing. This terracotta tower provides just enough water for the plants to drink without over or under hydrating them. 📸: @pvplantguy This is my first time using it and I decided to try it out with a few orchids, of course! I’m excited to only have to keep the tower filled as opposed to watering a bunch of orchids individually. I can’t say what will happen, so I guess you’ll just have to follow along to see how everything adapts over the next couple of weeks! Hello Phalaenopsis orchid planter! I go to Costco every two weeks and always scope out their houseplant options. I couldn’t resist this one because of the ceramic planter! Fair warning, these orchids are planted in a pest-based potting soil, which is not preferred long-term. Once this beauty is done showing off its blooms, I’m going to replant in some chunky orchid soil made up of coco chips, perlite, charcoal, and a little bit of coco coir. Types of orchid plants 🌤️ 1. Light Orchids need bright, indirect sunlight. Place near an east- or south-facing window with filtered light. Too much direct sun can burn leaves (yellow or brown patches). Too little light makes leaves dark green and stops flowering. 💡 Tip: If indoors, use a sheer curtain or grow light. 💧 2. Watering Water once a week in winter and twice a week in summer. Allow the potting medium to dry slightly between waterings. Use room-temperature, filtered, or rainwater (avoid hard tap water). Never let the roots sit in water — orchids hate soggy soil. 💡 Check: Stick your finger 1 inch deep — if it’s dry, it’s time to water. 🌬️ 3. Air Circulation Orchids love fresh air around their roots and leaves. Keep them in a place with gentle airflow (like a fan on low speed). Avoid stuffy, closed areas. 🌡️ 4. Temperature & Humidity Ideal temperature: 🌞 Day: 20–28°C (68–82°F) 🌙 Night: 15–20°C (59–68°F) Humidity: 50–70% is perfect. Use a humidity tray or mist the leaves occasionally if air is dry. 🌱 5. Potting Medium & Repotting Use a well-draining mix: bark chips, sphagnum moss, or perlite. Repot every 1–2 years or when roots outgrow the pot. Use a transparent pot if possible — orchids photosynthesize through roots! 🌸 6. Fertilizing Feed once every 2 weeks (during growth season) with a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20). In winter, feed once a month. Use diluted fertilizer (half strength). 💡 Tip: “Weakly, weekly” — better to feed less but often. ✂️ 7. Pruning After Blooming Once the flowers fade, cut the flower spike: For Phalaenopsis, cut just above a node (small bump) on the spike — may rebloom. For others, cut the spike at the base. ⚠️ 8.
