How to sew bias binding – Sewing tutorial 🪡 Bias binding has quickly become one of my favourite finishing techniques. It gives such a clean, professional look, especially on curved hems or edges that tend to fray. ✨ A quick refresher: bias binding is made by cutting fabric strips on a 45 degree angle to the grain. This diagonal cut gives it stretch and flexibility, which helps it curve beautifully around edges without puckering. 🌸 In this tutorial I’m using a 4 cm wide cotton bias binding in a Liberty of London print, soft, lightweight and perfect for beginners. 💫 Make your own! Bias binding is a great way to use up leftover fabric scraps and add a pop of colour or contrast to your projects. 🪡 Topstitch or hand stitch? You can absolutely hand stitch your binding instead of topstitching. I’d recommend this if you’re working with delicate fabrics or want to practice your hand stitching skills, it helps avoid the stiffness that sometimes comes with several lines of machine stitching. 🍃 Bonus tip: press your binding as you go. Wonder how to neatly join the ends of a bias binding? This sewing hack is especially handy when finishing round edges such as armholes or necklines. You might also use it when the length of the binding you are using is shorter than the edge that needs to be finished, as it lengthens the binding. 1. Place the binding to the right side of the garment and machine-stitch it at 5 mm (just under 1/4») from the edge. Stitch as close to the fold at the other end of the binding as possible. 2. Backstitch the end of the seam. Do not trim the ends of the binding just yet. 3. Fold the binding so that its right side is facing up. 4. Unfold the other end of the binding and place it over the first one, ensuring they are at a 90-degree angle toward each other. 5. Machine-stitch at a diagonal, starting at the corner and moving toward the previous stitching line. Backstitch at the beginning and end. 6. Trim the extra binding length off. 7. Fold the pieced binding over the seam allowance and press it in place. 8. Then fold the free edge of the binding under and press. 9. Lastly, fold the binding in half, ensuring its pressed folded edge covers the binding-to-garment seam by 1–2 mm. Press in place. 10. Machine-stitch at 1 mm from the inner folded edge to attach the other side of the binding. Finished! Do you find this type of #vikisews_sewinghacks useful? 😉

This is how I finish seams with bias binding on armholes or any looped seam. I’ve been using this technique for 10 years and really enjoy it. I don’t sew to connect the two ends first or after, I simply leave them like that, then fold one and overlap the other to hide the raw edges. What do you think?
