The Bill Evans Trio performing « Emily » in the Fall of 1970 at composer Ilkka Kuusisto’s home in Lauttasaari, one of the many islands of Helsinki, Finland. A few weeks before, pianist Bill Evans, bass player Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morrell had performed at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. This trio formed in 1969 with the arrival of Morrell. Emily is a 1964 tune composed by Johnny Mandel with lyrics by Johnny Mercer: it was the title song of the movie « The Americanization of Emily », adapted from a novel by Huie. The WW2 plot is largely anti-war and therefore was controversial at a time when the U.S. were engaged in the Vietnam War. The film was re-released in 1967 under the simpler title « Emily », and that’s the year Bills Evans recorded it for his album Further Conversations with Myself. Evans used to be a flutist in a garrison, but disliked the experience: he was a pacifist, whence Peace Piece (1958) and this work. But my favorite Bill Evans Trio version of Emily is the one with saxophonist Stan Getz, a 1974 live recording from Middleheim, in Belgium. Because his dad was abusive, Bill Evans, his brother and his mom would find refuge at the Epps, a family of music lovers. That’s where he and his brother heard classical music being played, and then got a teacher, Helen Leland, who judged that Harry was the better pianist but Bill the better sight-reader. Bill also picked up flute, piccolo and violin. Having played the classics till his late teens, Bill Evans recalled that French composer Darius Milhaud, who loved polytonal chords, jazzy and Brazilian rhythms was of great influence early on. Milhaud was the composition professor of jazzmen like Brubeck & Bacharach, but also of composers like Reich and Glass. #billevans #jazzpiano #jazz #jazzmusic #explore #piano #pianotime #pianist #pianista #pianolover #classicalmusic #classical #pianomusic #musician #musicaclassica #pianolove #pianogram #musiclover #Chopin #film #music #musica #pianocover #instamusic #pianomusic #instapiano #ピアノ #피아노 #钢琴

Happy birthday to Bill Evans! He would have turned 96 today. The pianist is playing a jazz standard called « My Foolish Heart » with Chuck Israels (bass) and Larry Bunker (drums). On March 19, 1965 the Trio gave two 35-minute sets for Jazz 625, a BBC TV program that aired for two years (1964-1966); sorry for the slight delay between image and sound. Bill Evans first recorded it in 1961 with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, and then again in 1975 in a duo setting with singer Tony Bennett. The origin of that tune goes back to 1949 when Victor Young composed it for the movie My Foolish Heart directed by Mark Robson. Along with the movie itself, the lyrics (by Ned Washington) were criticized as some « bloop-bleep-bloop of a sentimental ballad ». Bill Evans, who was a master of harmonic changes, turned the pedestrian progressions of the original tune into the gem we know today. That Midas touch came from his interest in French classical music, especially Debussy, Ravel and Milhaud. Bill Evans recalled that Milhaud, who loved polytonal chords, jazzy and Brazilian rhythms was of great influence early on: he mentioned the Suite provençale, Op. 152. Milhaud was the composition professor of Brubeck, Bacharach, Reich, Glass, etc. Regarding Debussy, Bills Evans said: « I love Impressionism, but I don’t strive for a cloudy effect, I’m striving for a lot of clarity really […] though I’d be happy to be associated with Debussy in any way. » There is a common misconception about Ravel and Debussy’s so-called Impressionism – a term they rejected. They both aimed for clarity of expression through harmonic complexity, just like Bill Evans. #billevans #jazzpiano #jazz #jazzmusic #explore #piano #pianotime #pianist #pianista #pianolover #classicalmusic #classical #pianomusic #musician #musicaclassica #pianolove #pianogram #musiclover #Chopin #film #music #musica #happybirthday #pianocover #instamusic #pianomusic #instapiano #ピアノ #피아노 #钢琴

Bill Evans lays out a blueprint: study the harmony, solve problems piece by piece, concentrate deeply, and keep improving.

1959 was an unusually monumental year for #jazzmusic Those 12 months saw the release of four great and genre-altering albums: Charles Mingus” Mingus Ah Um, Dave Brubeck’s Time Out Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz to Come, and Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. Miles talks about the inspiration for Kind of Blue. He cites the finger piano used in African ballet alongside Ravel’s mood as the conceptual foundation for Kind of Blue. But often as he shares, a concept you have in your mind, becomes very different in reality. #milesdavis #billevans #jazzday

Bill Evans’ playing is like a beautiful skater on the ice. Just a melodic figure to listen to. He was part of the seminal record and group on Miles Davis’ ‘Kind of Blue’ while at the same time, recording with Chet Baker. He was an incredibly lyrical pianist, but he had the ability to be forceful and ambitious as well. His expressive piano work inspired a whole generation of players who appreciated his unique harmonic approach, his introspective lyricism, and his unhurried improvisation along with an analytical perfection. We never tire of hearing the tune, Bill Evans wrote for his niece, “Waltz for Debby.” Bill Evans: Aug 16, 1929 - Sept 29, 1980 #billevans #billevanstrio #jazzpiano
