Here’s part two, tumblestacking the top of the kiln! Please note that I bisque fire to 08 #tumblestack #bisque #bisquefire #bisqueload #kilnloading #cone08

Step-by-Step firing instructions below 👇🏼 1. Glazing Once the bisque-fired pieces are ready, I apply metallic based glazes for that signature iridescent finish. For clean separation lines between glazed and unglazed areas, I use painters tape, sponges, and water. Wax resist may be used as well. 2. Loading the Kiln I carefully load the glazed pieces into a gas-powered kiln, placing them on kiln shelves with plenty of space to avoid the molten glaze on the pots from sticking together. 3. Firing the Kiln The kiln is fired quickly, reaching about 1850°F (approximately 1010°C) in 45-60 minutes. I watch the glaze melt and bubble through the exhaust vent to check on the progress of the firing. In this case, the glaze on the pots acts as its own pyrometric cones. 4. Removing the Hot Pieces Wearing heat-resistant gloves and using metal tongs, I pull the glowing red-hot pieces from the kiln while they’re still molten. 5. Reduction Chambers The hot pieces go straight into metal cans filled with combustible materials (like sawdust, newspaper, or leaves). I close the lid to starve the fire of oxygen, known as “reduction” that gives Raku its smoky, unpredictable finishes. 6. Quenching After 10-15 minutes in the chamber, I plunge the pieces into water. This stops the chemical reactions and helps set the final look. 7. Cleaning Once cool, I clean off soot and ash using a sponge and a green scrubby, revealing the crackles, lusters, and surprises the fire left behind. Message me if you’d like to learn more about the Raku firing process, my kiln design, and upcoming workshops. #raku #rakupottery #rakufiring #rakuceramics #rakufired #kiln #potterylover #potterylife #potteryworkshop #potterymaking #potterydesign #potteryvideos #potteryreels #potteryofinstagram #potteryaddict #potterylovers #ceramicart #ceramicartist #ceramiclife #ceramicdesign #ceramicist #ceramiclove #clayartist #lagunaclay #homemadeisbest #makersofinstagram

The sound of ceramics after a bisque firing. Make sure you have your sound on for this one! #asmr #asmrceramics #asmrpottery #bisquefire #openingthekiln

The best part!!! Time to peel! 🙌💃🙌💃 There’s something so satisfying about revealing the design. I’ve had this song on repeat and without realising, I ended up adding the word bloom into the design. I love how the process celebrates the clay. Next step: bisque fire! 🔥 Behind the scenes making my entry for the @liminalgallery_geelong 🤍 . . . . . . #pottery #wheelthrowing #potterystencil #underglaze #ceramicartist #bloom #bloombabybloom #underglazepainting #underglazes #peelandreveal #creativeprocess #australianartists #bisquefire

For the folks nervously considering buying a kiln, yet having absolutely no experience using one: this reel is for you! It’s a bummer that local studios don’t offer kiln classes of some kind to help us learn firing and safety and loading strategies and such. It’s SUCH valuable information for understanding pottery better, even for people who don’t have their own kiln. Colleges sometimes offer these but finding one local to you with availability at a time you actually can participate isn’t always feasible. So I’m here to say you can totally do this with no experience whatsoever. Most people buying kilns learn on their own, so happily there are a lot of resources online. Plus in the case of @skuttkilns at least, they have a great helpline and are super supportive. You can do this, and this reel is meant to put your mind at ease and take the pressure off. And I am always happy to answer questions. For those curious about this kiln: it’s a Skutt km1022-3 which I purchased new last year and pretty much tricked out with all the bells and whistles (such as touchscreen and envirovent and furniture kit) because I wanted maximum ease and convenience. Her name is Dottie the Hottie. I chose this height instead of the 1027 (which is five inches taller) because I’m a shorty and I didn’t want to have difficulty reaching the bottom. It’s been plenty big for my small batch purposes and I don’t have to run it often, I just wait until I’ve filled several shelves worth of pieces and then I’m ready to fire. It fits well in my 10x15’ small studio although it does take up quite a section (bonus: kilns generally need to sit 18” away from any wall or item for safety so when you measure, don’t forget how much extra space you’ll need). Now that I know what I know, if I had to do it all over I would totally buy this kiln again. While you can find good used deals, buying new and having that warranty and time before having to learn to, say, change elements, alleviated my anxiety so much. Lemme know if you have other questions! #kilns #skuttkilns #buyingakiln #newkiln #kilnhaul #bisquefiring #bisquefire #potterystudio #potterystudiolife

For today’s tutorial Tuesday we’re talking about burnishing pots with terra sigillata. This is an optional step that is used to make pots shiny before a pit firing. We’re doing a little pit firing soon and will be sure to show the difference between burnished with terra sigillata and not. Stay tuned for more pit firing content coming sooooon and let me know if you have any terra sig questions! #pottery #pitfiring #terrasig #terrasigillata #burnished #burnishing #tutorialtuesday #potterytutorial

Редукция в конце обжига, и много дел, связанных с ней! Редукция меняет общий цвет керамики на более сдержанный, но это не точно🔥😄✌

Firing pottery in a pitfire! I used bisqueware for this and did not glaze it, it was the materials in the pit that gave it the color #clay #pottery #ceramics

Unload the kiln with me!!🔥💖🔥 This firing was a combo of overglaze and bisque🔥🔥🔥 All of the pieces that needed a second firing are finished, and the big bowl in the beginning will need another firing, which was expected. Fun fact✨My first firing and my last firing go to the same temp, so I can fire them together to keep things efficient! Also the glazing process for my final firing is my longest process, and the process for my first firing is much faster, so putting them both in the same kiln helps move things along much faster😉 All of the bisque mugs and bowls in this firing will get a base coat of white stroke and coat and will be fired to cone 7 before adding the rainbow overglaze. The butter dishes at the end will get a rainbow ombré base coat of @amacobrent velvet underglaze, and will then get the rainbow monarch finish🌈💖✨The rainbow ombré finish is something I pretty much only do by special request now, and if you preorder one, I’ll make two, so you get to take your pick when they’re done! I’m in the final stretch before my virtual workshop @pocosinarts 🎉🥳🎉 Right now I’m prepping the necessary steps so I can efficiently show you a wide variety of steps to my many glazing processes!! The workshop will be set up like a cooking show, with various steps of my processes ready to go, so I can show before and after for each step and keep things moving, to maximize the amount of information I can show during the 2.5 hr workshop! If you would like to join in on the fun, make sure to click the link in my bio to sign up! 🌈💖 💖🌈 🌈💖 #hamdmade #wheelthrownpottery #ceramics #pottery #porcelain #potteryvideos #highfire #overglaze #lowfire #ohiomade #bisquefire #rainbowwaterfall #maycoglaze #roygbiv

My biggest bisque fire so far! All looked pretty good except some micro cracks in handles 🙄. I’m going to glaze with some more colour (omg 😱) so will see how they come out the other side. #bisque #ceramics #kilnhaul #korumburrapotter #foxfarmceramics

Loading the kiln for bisque — and honestly, never attempted a stacking this risky before! Holding my breath and hoping for no casualties 🫣🔥 #potterdilemmas #bisquefire #kilnadventures #ceramiclife #fypage
