Reaktor atomowy RBMK-1000, 3 blok reaktora, Czarnobylska Elektrownia Atomowa Reaktor ten miał kilka nietypowych rozwiązań w porównaniu do zachodnich konstrukcji. Nie trzeba było wyłączać reaktora w przypadku wymiany paliwa, ponieważ można było to robić w trakcie jego eksploatacji. Pracował na nisko wzbogaconym uranie, grafit pełnił funkcję moderatora, a woda funkcję chłodziwa. Reaktor ten miał dodatni współczynnik pustki, co oznaczało, że pojawienie się pary wodnej w chłodziwie mogło prowadzić do wzrostu reaktywności i mocy reaktora, zamiast ich spadku. Wynikało to z faktu, że woda pochłaniała część neutronów, więc jej ubytek zmniejszał absorpcję neutronów. Z tego powodu konstrukcja RBMK była na Zachodzie uznawana za mniej bezpieczną. Między innymi dlatego jednym z warunków przystąpienia Litwy do Unii Europejskiej było wyłączenie elektrowni atomowej w Ignalinie. Nie wspomnieliśmy jeszcze o jednym rozwiązaniu — mianowicie reaktor ten nadawał się również do potencjalnej produkcji plutonu do celów militarnych dzięki możliwości wymiany paliwa podczas pracy.
