African American archives, 1941. Love in the time of letters. Before screens and swipes, affection lived in ink, in folded paper carried across oceans and train lines. In every archive lies a quiet reminder that love, too, has a history, written, kept, and remembered. #ArchiveAfrica #AfricanAmericanHistory #ValentinesDay #BlackArchives #LoveLetters #BlackLove #CulturalMemory #AfricanDiaspora #Heritage #CollectiveMemory #PanAfrican #BlackCulture #ArchivingAfrica #AfricanHeritage #DiasporaArchives #CulturalPreservation #HistoryOfLove #BlackRomance #VintageValentines #OralHistory #HistoricalPhotography #ArchivesMatter #AfricanArt #BlackHistory #MemoryKeepers #AfricanStudies #LoveInHistory #194

This clip comes from *Black on Black*, a 1968 documentary filmed in South Central Los Angeles and first aired on CBS. The film was made without a narrator and focused on letting Black residents speak for themselves about everyday life, challenges, and experiences just a few years after the Watts riots. It went on to win several major awards and is often seen as one of the first documentaries to present these conversations on national television without filtering them through an outside voice. In this part of the film, a group of Black women talk about the differences they noticed between grocery stores in Black neighborhoods and those in white neighborhoods, from the quality of food to what was available on the shelves. It’s a conversation about something as basic as buying groceries, but it reflects what people were seeing and dealing with at the time. Watching it now naturally brings up a bigger thought: have things actually changed, or are some of these same concerns still around today, just in different forms?

“As Black women, we have to be the inspiration for the nation.” — Amina Baraka, 1970. Baraka was a poet, activist, and one of the defining voices of the Black Arts Movement. Here she’s laying out a philosophy that starts with self-education, community, and a value system rooted in Blackness. This clip is from Black Journal — the first nationally televised public affairs program made for, about, and by Black Americans.
