Day 040/100 of sharing insights into our work as a design studio. Today we want to focus on one of our signature materials: Black Concrete & how it’s made. This material - besides Yakisugi Burnt Wood, Hand Brushed Aluminium, Natural Oak and Stainless Steel - shapes the visual identity of our designs. Black Concrete is definitely the most unique of those materials within our portfolio. After years of optimizing our concrete works, we eventually wanted to add a unique feature, besides the overall very specific composition and sculpting technique of our concrete. So we did some material studies and ended up with, what is now a central part of our portfolio: Black Concrete. The specific look is not only at the surface, but throughout the core of the material. This is achieved by adding deep black pigment (flight as) to the concrete. You have to be very exact on the mixture and the amount of water, to keep a consistent and exact result. When wet, the concrete is a lot deeper in black than when it’s dried. Our goal with the mixture is to archive an ash black tone, that has a bit of a gradient to it. This is archieved by exactly measuring the amount of flight ash, adding a bit more with every pour into the formwork. This signature concrete is a central material of our portfolio, available for custom designs on request. Any shape and product possible. Open for commissions.

I’m seriously thinking about placing some of the materials I use on my online store, as I’m getting a lot of questions about it, and how to get this magical black in particular. So I think to start with pigments! Also later I’d like to add a brochure about concrete, maybe even make sets/kits... What do you think? I would really be happy to make it easier for my fellow makers, since there is very little information specifically on decorative concrete. I remember days and weeks of searching and googling, wondering if this thing would work, not to mention the cost of all these experiments and that feeling of constant frustration...
