Beautiful black phase wolf in Yellowstone. Did you know that the reason there are black wolves is because black dogs bred with the wolves when settlers first arrived. Coat colour in wolves (Canis lupus) is determined by a gene called CPD103. The ancestral version of CPD103 codes for a grey coat but a genetic mutation that arose in domestic dogs and then crossed into wolves codes for a black coat colour. Wolves inherit two copies of CPD103 - one from each parent - but only need to inherit one copy of the black variant to have a black coat. This is now why there are black wolves. The difference between an Arctic Wolf and a phased Black Wolf is that could can still see a darker base coat and ear tips in wolves that were once black. The phasing happens from one year old onwards, some black wolves can become completely grey white by the time they’re 8. If you see a pitch black ‘wolf’ when he’s a lot older, he won’t be pure wolf as dogs generally don’t phase, they just get a bit grizzled on the muzzle.
