🎣 WAIT… blue meat?! Yup 🎏 this is lingcod! And that vibrant blue flesh? 100% real, real food and no filter. We caught this one last season near our family cabin in Barkley Sound, and I couldn’t stop staring at it… even though we’re totally used to seeing this kind of thing and blue out here. It’s just so wild looking, even when you’ve grown up with it! 😅Okay, so I’m still kind of shocked by how much this video blew up on my Instagram story.. (and 865k views?! Y’all turned a wild blue fish into a full-blown movement. Thank you for riding the wave with us!)🩵 Guess there are a lot of outdoorsy fishing folks out there who’ve never seen blue meat like this before. I grew up with harvesting lingcod with my family and this blue-green flesh is totally normal for us, but now I’m thinking… maybe this is the perfect opportunity to share some cool facts about it! 🎏For those wondering, they are very common around Vancouver Island, but only 20% of lingcod have this wild blue-green flesh (thanks to a pigment called biliverdin). The best part? It turns white when you cook it, and tastes incredibly delicious🎏 super mild, flaky, and just the right sweetness. Lingcod season just opened coast-wide (always check the regs before you go) and we’re already planning freezer restock missions! 🎏Some anglers believe lingcod with blue flesh taste even better than the regular kind - sweeter and cleaner. There’s no proven difference in taste scientifically, it’s a long-standing debate in the fishing world. The blue ones just feel extra special when you catch them! My 1st ever "Blue" Lingcod!!! This guy measured at 21 and 3/4 inches. Legal size to keep is 22 inches. So close! This guy wanted a 2nd round when released. 😂 Lingcod have blue flesh due to a natural bile pigment called biliverdin, which gives their meat a striking blue-green color. We just spent 5 days up in remote canada diving hard searching for big ling cod. These trips are a healthy mix of suffering and satisfaction. The water is cold (47-48°) the air is also cold, you dive long cold days, exploring new territory hoping to come across a tank of a fish. Unfortunately I didn’t see a single ling cod over 8 pounds this trip but this is the exact thing that keeps us coming back and willing to go through the suffering of spearfishing cold water. Im overdue for a proper ling cod

Found the footage of my PB Ling from 2012…she was 40 inches, 22.5 pounds, and totally spawned out and empty belly and skinny and out looking for a meal after laying her eggs…after a few good meals I bet she would’ve been over 25, and if preggo pushing 30…still can’t believe I was able to tackle her underwater and get my hand in her throat right before the double flopper shaft from my little mini Riffe ripped out of her back 😂 #freediving #spearfishing #lingcod #lingzilla #ophiodonelongatus
