We spotted this female newt while checking our boundaries in the Swincombe valley today. The boggy areas next to the Rivers Swincombe and Strane offer ideal conditions for amphibians to live and breed, and this newt will be laying her eggs soon. Rather than depositing their eggs in a big mass like frogs and toads, newts have a different technique. A gravid (pregnant) female likes to lay her eggs on thin, rounded leaves like speedwell and water mint. After choosing a leaf that is fit for purpose, she manoeuvres herself onto it and lays a single egg. Then she folds the leaf over it with her back legs, protectively sealing the egg inside. #Dartmoor #newt #bogs

The Pitcher Plant Bogs of Southeast Texas are one of the coolest and most diverse habitats in the state. These bogs feature many carnivorous species with the most notable being Sarracenia alata or Pale Pitcher Plant. Other notable species include Marshallia graminifolia (Grass Leaf Barbara’s Buttons) and Liatris pycnostachya var. lasiophylla (Wooly Prairie Blazing Star) as well as numerous rare orchid species. While typically inundated, these bogs become dry at certain times of the year and require fire for maintenance and to keep woody encroachment out. The suppression of fire in the last one hundred years is the biggest threat to these pitcher plant bogs and has resulted in the conversion of these bogs to closed canopy forest #pitcherplants #carnivorousplants #bogs #texaswildflowers #nativeplants
