When iron is exposed to moisture, it forms iron oxide (rust), which expands and physically “locks” the bolt threads into the surrounding metal. Here is the engineering process to defeat it. @bitzcasino First, you apply a penetrating oil. Unlike standard lubricant, these have extremely low viscosity and high surface tension, allowing them to seep into microscopic gaps via capillary action. This chemically breaks down the brittle rust bonds. If the bolt is snapped flush, you must drill a pilot hole exactly in the center of the stud. Using a left-hand drill bit is a pro trick here, as the counter-clockwise heat and friction sometimes “grab” the bolt and back it out during the drilling process itself. If it’s still stuck, you insert a bolt extractor. These tools have reverse-spiral threads that bite deeper into the metal as you apply more torque. For the most stubborn cases, engineers use thermal expansion.
