There are many incredible outdoor spots to visit in the Poconos. However, few are as much fun to explore as the boulder field in Hickory Run State Park. This boulder field is hidden deep within the woods of this 16,000-acre state park in Carbon County, PA. Didn’t know quite what to expect of Boulder Field at Hickory Run State Park…but it surpassed all the expectations I didn’t even have!!! This huge field of rocks was created in the last ice age and is a really unique geologic feature. My Big Girl made it the WHOLE way across and Mr. Middle came so close! He said “I went as far as I wanted to and I’m proud of myself.” 😍 I was proud of myself too for managing to pick my path and keep my balance halfway across and back carrying Baby B! Saw LOTS of wolf spiders but thankfully no timber rattlers or black bears…so far. 😂😬 This was seriously such a cool experience we were all sort of speechless for awhile. It was like nothing we have ever done. Can you hear the tiny hammering sounds from everyone else in the background? Last Wednesday, our own Patrick Daly FA’ed one of the most coveted and stunning boulder problems in New England! Edit by @bodhikamitses Read below for Peter Kamitses’s write up: Back in 2000, I was out looking for boulders and exploring the base of one of the most obvious (yet still closed) road side cliffs in Vermont (the Bolton Dome) I had no idea what I was about to find… I came around a corner and my jaw dropped… It was one of the most visually imposing boulders I’d ever seen.. We spent a few years quietly doing the FA’s of a handful of the proud highball lines the boulder had to offer… We always referred to it as the Project Boulder due to the obvious line just right of center that had just the right amount of widely spaced perfect slopey edges to clearly be possible… by someone… someday… Over the years I’d bring strong visiting climbers to climb the established lines and have a look at the mega proj… But no one really ever seemed to believe it would be possible for them so it never really got tried… Last Wednesday I convinced Patrick Daly to come give it a rip… We brought a ladder and rigged up a rope as it would be potentially dangerous to take bad falls from the 20’ tall exit moves while learning the beta… Patrick Daly utterly owned that shit! Obliterating the aura of impossibility in just a few tries. The boulder is open for business! And Patrick humbly thought maybe V11/12… We’ll see what others think! One of the most perfect hard highballs on one of the dopest boulders in the northeast ain’t a project anymore!!! Come and get it!

Day 11 of Pennsylvania hikes: Just a note that I made this series last year for a different platform— so I’m picking and choosing some of them to share here. 😊 Hickory Run state park in the Poconos has over 40 miles of trails. We did two kid-friendly hikes and drove to the Boulder Field. (You can also hike to the Boulder Field) ⚠️ The road to the Boulder Field is about 3 miles and has A LOT of pot holes. The hikes: Hawk Falls—easy, 1.2 miles out and back to a beautiful waterfall Shades of Death—moderate, 2.2 miles out and back featuring a 15 foot waterfall and several smaller cascades. We loved our visit to Hickory Run! ‼️Warning: wear orange if hiking during hunting season. And please remember to leave no trace! Did you know Hickory Run State Park in PA has 44 miles of hiking trails? 🤯 I'm sure they are all beautiful in their own way, but these 3 trails are some of the best in the park. • Boulder Field Trail - 3.5 miles out and back ( 7 miles total), this trail leads to Boulders Field, one of the largest of its kind in the Appalachian region. 🪨 You can park across the street from the Hawk Falls Trailhead on 534 to access the trailhead. Or if you just want to climb on the rocks without doing the hike, you can drive to the field, however, the road is unpaved and uneven in places and may be very muddy after rain, so make sure your vehicle can handle that. 😉 • Shades of Death - not as ominous as it sounds 💀 this 1 mile out and back (2 miles total) follows along Sand Spring Run and offers several waterfalls and runs along the way. The trail is very rocky and requires navigation around water and large boulders at times. Park at either the park office (bathrooms and water fountains available) or at the small parking area on 534. • Hawk Falls - both the shortest (.6 mile out and back) and easiest of the trails listed here. But also the most popular! Park at the lot on 534 and walk along the road a few yards to the trailhead. I highly recommend visiting in the off-season or during the week as the lot will fill up quickly in summer and on weekends. ‼️ Let's all do our part when visiting these beautiful places. Pack out your trash (including fruit peels) and be respectful of other visitors. Follow the rules of the park. #devilsmarbleyard is one of the most unique hikes I’ve done and it’s a MUST DO! It’s literally an 8-acre rock climbing playground & it’s unlike anything i’d ever seen! 🪨 🥾 Over 500 million years ago, these rocks started out as a white sandy beach. Interestingly, the sand was filled with worms 🐛 that created tunnels as they moved through the sediment. Eventually, the sand was submerged & transformed into quartzite, which remained in-tact for millions of years until the Ice Age, when freeze-and-thaw weather patterns broke it into big boulders. Photo Finish, V10+ (2nd known ascent), Castlewood Canyon SP, CO. I’ve come to love reviving some hard boulders in this great canyon. This one originally FA’d by @thomasbetterton back in 2011, doesn’t seem to have seen a repeat since the FA. The boulder revolves around a slopping 3 finger pocket that has some bite and figuring out your desired method to move off of it. For me, I settled on deadpointing to a small set of crystals at the lip, a move that at first felt very unlikely. There appears to be a more dynamic method as well, that was used for the FA. As I demonstrated, don’t overlook the top, it’s certainly droppable. Let’s get this awesome line some traffic!
