Here’s how it works! 👇 This strategy, called box method, is a super easy alternative for kids (and adults!) who struggle with keeping place values lined up when doing long division. 💾Don’t forget to LIKE and SAVE this for later and FOLLOW for more fun math hacks and resources! ➕➗➖✖️ ⭐️When dividing multi-digit numbers, please each place value in its own box. Put the divisor on the outside of the box. ⭐️Treat each box as its own individual division problem! In the example above, I started by dividing 9 by 7. I can make one group of seven, so I put my group on the top of the box and then subtracted (9-7) to see that I had 2 out of that group remaining. ⭐️ Then simply take the remainder from the first box and move it up into the tens place of the second box. Continue the process until you get to the last box. Your final subtraction answer is the remainder! ⭐️I always offer this as a strategy when teaching standard algorithm in division to give kids the option. They choose this one every time! ❤️❤️ Do you have any favorite division strategy? ➗BOX METHOD DIVISION➗ (Example: 698➗5) Somehow, I never learned this method growing up. 🤯 While I am still a huge proponent of teaching the WHY behind the strategy, I also believe that a different approach could be a big “win” for kids who are struggling and just need to know how to divide, especially in this period of time where we are trying to teach math through our screens 💆🏻♀️ Bonus: it saves SO MUCH space on paper and YES this works for 2-digit divisors! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 A full tutorial is in my “Division” highlights here on IG. Check it out and tag a buddy who’s struggling to teach division right now... 👯♀️👯➗ *Side note: I am writing on my iPad Pro, with a standard Apple Pencil, using the Procreate app. There’s a cover on my pencil and you can find it in my Amazon shop using my profile link.* #distanceteaching #remoteteaching #iteachmath #math #maths #teacher #boxmethoddivision #fourthgrade #whateverwor

If your students are struggling with long division, this strategy (box method) is a must-try!!! It follows the exact same steps as long division (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down) except each place value spot has its own organized box for the steps. It is the neater version of long division AND it takes up less space!! 😊 *Pt. 2 will be coming out later with a side-by-side comparison of long division vs box method. • • • #Longdivision #longdivisionstruggles #boxmethod #mathhack #mathtip #teacherhack #teachertip #4thgrademath #5thgrademath #4thgrade #teachersofig #iteachtoo #teachersofinstagram #teachergram #teacherlife #classroominspiration #studentengagement #4thgradeteachers #elementaryschool #elementaryteacher #primaryschool #teachersfollowteachers #teachers #elementary #elementaryeducation #schoollife #classroom #schoolroutines #classroommanagement #classroomroutine

Secret to knocking Division out the park ⚾️ We know what you are thinking, another method.. Why yes, but its not exactly what you are thinking. It’s more of a means of organization. This method allows for a more spatial effective way for students to identify repeating steps. But before we jump in just a little reminder…. With standard long division we follow the following steps: ◉ Divide, ÷ ◉ Multiply, × ◉ Subtract, - ◉ Bring It Down ↓ *Repeat until their are no more space* ◉ Remainder, r Now, If you got this down, then you already know box method. Check this out…. All the steps are the same, except after you subtract you now bring that number up ↑ to the next # before you continue Did you find this helpful and what more strategies all in one place? 🧠TOP TIP⚡️ Doubling both numbers in a division is super handy when we’re dividing by a decimal ending in .5, because it’ll turn it into a whole number (since double ½ is 1): 18÷0.5 is the same as 36÷1 For all other decimals with 1 decimal place, we could multiply both numbers by 10 to get rid of the decimal: 4.2÷0.7 is the same as 42÷7 👉To get the best start in division, check out our fantastic division workbook.
