➗BOX METHOD DIVISION➗ (Example: 698➗5) Somehow, I never learned this method growing up. 🤯 While I am still a huge proponent of teaching the WHY behind the strategy, I also believe that a different approach could be a big “win” for kids who are struggling and just need to know how to divide, especially in this period of time where we are trying to teach math through our screens 💆🏻‍♀️ Bonus: it saves SO MUCH space on paper and YES this works for 2-digit divisors! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 A full tutorial is in my “Division” highlights here on IG. Here’s how it works! 👇 This strategy, called box method, is a super easy alternative for kids (and adults!) who struggle with keeping place values lined up when doing long division. 💾Don’t forget to LIKE and SAVE this for later and FOLLOW for more fun math hacks and resources! ➕➗➖✖️ ⭐️When dividing multi-digit numbers, please each place value in its own box. Put the divisor on the outside of the box. ⭐️Treat each box as its own individual division problem! In the example above, I started by dividing 9 by 7. I can make one group of seven, so I put my group on the top of the box and then subtracted (9-7) to see that I had 2 out of that group remaining. ⭐️ Then simply take the remainder from the first box and move it up into the tens place of the second box. Continue the process until you get to the last box. Your final subtraction answer is the remainder! ⭐️I always offer this as a strategy when teaching standard algorithm in division to give kids the option. When students struggle with division, it’s often because they don’t know what number to try. This method helps organize their thinking step by step. Step 1: Write a list of the multiples of the divisor. (I call these the “hops.”) Step 2: Draw a small box above each digit of the dividend. Step 3: Use your multiples (hops) to see how far you can go without going over. Step 4: The number of hops goes in the box above. Step 5: The multiple itself goes in the problem below. This helps students see their thinking instead of guessing. Save this to try with a student later, and follow for more simple math strategies from Dolphin Math.
