​Forget what you see in the pros. Bouts are scored using the 10-Point System, and judges are looking for these specific things to decide who wins the round: ​1. Number of Quality Blows on Target Judges don’t score "pitty-pat" punches or wild swings that hit the arms. A quality blow must land cleanly on the target area (front and sides of the head or body above the belt) directly with the knuckle part of the glove, and it needs to have the weight of the body or shoulder behind it. ​2. Technical and Tactical Domination Who is the ring general? Judges reward the fighter who neutralizes their opponent's style (like a boxer out-boxing a slugger), controls the center of the ring, and uses excellent defense—slipping, blocking, and weaving—to avoid getting hit cleanly while setting up their own shots. ​3. Competitiveness Heart matters on the scorecards. Judges look for the boxer who simply refuses to give up. If you lose the first round but come out stronger in the second, or if you take a heavy shot but immediately push the pace and fight back, you score points for pure competitiveness and will to win. ​4. The Foul Factor (Infringing the Rules) You can land the best shot of the night, but if it infringes a rule (like hitting behind the head, slapping, or excessive holding), the judges are strictly instructed not to score it. Plus, referees can issue warnings or deduct points that will instantly ruin your scorecard. ​So, the next time the crowd goes wild over a wild haymaker that hit nothing but gloves, remember: the judges are scoring the quiet, technical counter-punches instead!
