This is how I *personally* manage my ovarian cancer risk due to my BRCA 1 genetic variant. Due to my family history, I see my gynecologic oncologist 2-3 times a year to stay up on my cancer screenings as well as my annual exam! My gynecologic oncologist plans my care according to NCCN guidelines. This is just what I do and should not be mistaken for medical advice! Sometimes the worst things that happen put you on the path to the best things that will ever happen in your life. Blessed to have the opportunity and access to genetic testing ten years ago. Blessed to have the opportunity and access to an amazing medical team who performed risk reducing surgeries 5 years ago. Blessed to have the opportunity to know about my genetic mutation, my risk and what I could do about it. BRCA was a blessing in disguise that allowed me to make proactive decisions for my body and life that my mom and patients wished they could have had. My genetic mutation made me a patient that was hungry to learn everything I could about lifestyle and mindset as medicine. About everything that was in my control and not accept the idea that my genes = my destiny. Ten years later, it led me here today…. Raising two kids with the knowledge that, yes we can’t control our genes, but we can control so many of our everyday habits that have a massive impact on our gene expression and risk of not just cancer but ever other major lifestyle related chronic illness. Tomorrow, on Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day, I undergo a double mastectomy after completing 16 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy for TNBC, one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer. Triple negative doesn’t respond to hormone therapy. It moves fast. And it requires some of the toughest treatments available. I ask of you tomorrow do your self-breast exams. Schedule your mammogram. Know your genetics. Advocate for yourself. Tonight, I’m dancing out the nerves with my babies and holding tight to the reason I fight. I had my ovaries removed at 41. Not because I’m a minimalist (though I do love a clean bench top), but because I carry the BRCA1 gene variant. In addition to raising my lifetime risk of breast cancer — which reared its head last year — BRCA1 also increases the risk of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is sneaky. It whispers. And by the time most women hear it, it’s screaming. There’s no reliable screening test which is why women like me are told: “Take them out now or risk never getting the chance.” So I did. Prophylactic oophorectomy. (Say that three times while sipping wine.) Unlike other cancers, there’s no Pap smear or mammogram or ultrasound equivalent for ovaries. Nothing that reliably catches it early. Which is why ovarian cancer still has a 50% fatality rate. Half of all women diagnosed won’t survive. That’s not just a statistic — it’s a warning bell we’re not ringing loud enough. Today is World Ovarian Cancer Day, and this is mr saying: we deserve better. Better research, better resources, better outcomes. And in the meantime? Women in every corner of our globe, from every background, deserve to know. About the risks, the genes, the options.
