There was a time when I would have let fear convince me to stay home, to cover up, to miss out on life. But I refuse to let my son grow up watching me hide from the world. I want him to remember his mom laughing, swimming, holding his hand, soaking up every second of life, fully there. Fear controlled too much of my life when I was younger. I don’t talk about my motherhood often on here but I wanted to share something. When I was told I was brca1 positive and had an almost 90% chance of getting breast cancer in my lifetime, I was a first time new mom. my son was 6 months old. I sat in my doctors office listening to her tell me my choices of preventative care and the loudest voice I heard was my own. I would do anything, give anything, to make that percentage go down as low as possible if it meant potentially being able to live on this earth longer. I made my choice. I can handle people thinking that I’m ugly, that my scars should be covered at the beach, people not agreeing with what I choose to do with my body. what I couldn’t handle is if I had the power to make a choice to be able to watch my son grow up and I got breast cancer all because I chose vanity instead.
