This clip is from the legendary Star Licks instructional video Brian May filmed in the early 1980s, where he broke down the gear, techniques and harmonies behind his playing style. In the video, Sir Brian May explains how changing a delay from one repeat to two repeats completely transforms the feel of a guitar line, creating the massive layered sound that became one of Queen’s signatures. What makes it even crazier is that he is demonstrating all of this on the legendary “Red Special,” the guitar he built with his father Harold May in the early 1960s because they could not afford a Fender or Gibson. The instrument was handmade using wood from an old fireplace mantel and various household materials, yet it ended up creating some of the most iconic guitar tones in rock history. Brian’s use of delay and harmony became essential to songs like Brighton Rock, Bohemian Rhapsody and We Will Rock You. Instead of treating the guitar like a rhythm instrument, he approached it almost like an orchestra, stacking echoes and harmonized leads to make one guitar sound enormous. That approach helped Queen sell more than 300 million records worldwide, while their 1981 compilation Greatest Hits became the best selling album in UK history. A “repeat” in this context comes from a delay unit, which records your guitar signal and plays it back milliseconds later, creating an echo that can be timed musically. With one repeat, you hear a single echo following each note, but with two repeats or more, those echoes begin to stack and interact, almost turning the guitar into a call and response instrument with itself. May mastered this by carefully setting delay times so each note he played would bounce back in rhythm, allowing him to “answer” his own phrases live, creating harmonies and layered melodies in real time without additional players.
