Every day when I send my child that has nonverbal severe autism to school, we pack clothes and diapers. It’s a reality that never gets easier, especially as she gets older. This isn’t the kind of autism they talk about on social media or on love on the spectrum. It’s the kind that usually has an intellectual disability with it where lifelong care is the reality. When Campbell was first diagnosed, I didn’t know if she would ever spend a night away from me. Even now, I sometimes wonder if we’ll always live under the same roof. Where other mothers get certainty, those with special needs children get question marks. But this sleepover was monumental. It showed me that my fear of sending her out into the world is real—things won’t always go right. But it also was proof of how she’ll survive it, long after I’m gone: People. Not everyone will accept your child. But the right people will. They won’t see difference as a burden to manage—but rather as something to celebrate. This was before a diagnosis. Before specialists. Before we knew what was really going on. I had no idea what was coming. But I remember the fear when I looked into her eyes. I knew. We’ve missed out on a lot because of autism. I imagine not many nine-year-olds have never been to a restaurant. But just because our milestones are delayed—or dare I say, different—doesn’t mean they’re less worthy of celebration. There’s a reason the entire restaurant began singing along with our tiny table of four. Our kids are extraordinary. They deserve to be seen. And even if it takes more time or accommodations, we must keep going. We must not let our fear override our hope. They will get there—in their own time, in their own way. Mimi’s favorite thing in life is to have a complete MELTDOWN when LIFE isn’t going her way. Needless to say, Mimi enjoys dancing and singing, BUT it has to be on HER terms and requires a lot of PATIENCE. It’s all about what Mimi wants and when she wants it. Once it gets to this level, I need a moment and so does she. In the end, I just call it and do it again at a later time. Life as a special needs mom is not easy and has more challenges than I could ever list, but we do the best we can. And sometimes what’s best for us is a little bit of SPACE. And therapy for this mom. The day before everything changed. We were on vacation, walking to the pool. Kayla pushing Nora in the stroller. Within 24 hours, we got the call. A diagnosis for Nora… Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome. And just like that, everything shifted. Three months later, after testing our other children, we got another call. Kayla had it too. Looking back at this now, it’s hard not to pause here… because this was the last day we didn’t know. It was just an ordinary day, and we had no idea what was soon coming. If you just got answers you weren’t expecting, I know how heavy that moment can feel. That diagnosis was one of the hardest things we’ve ever heard. But knowing helped us in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Keep reminding yourself… yes, a lot changes, BUT your child is the same child they were the day before the diagnosis.
