The largest stag beetle in Australia and one of the most colorful out of the entire Lucanidae family, Phalacrognathus muelleri is one stunning insect. Not only does it possess the giant set of mandibles, but its exoskeleton is remarkably iridescent. A number of morphs exist, where the beetles may display a wide range of colors. They are prominent in the forests across Queensland and New Guinea where they lay eggs in decaying wood. Larvae are important components in the ecosystem as they work together with fungi to break down logs throughout. When they emerge, the adults will feed on sweets such as nectar, sap and fruits. Sozinhos, os insetos correspondem a 75% de todas as espécies animais conhecidas, e isso ocorre, em parte, por causa dos besouros. 1/4 de todas as espécies descritas de animais são besouros, o que os torna o grupo mais diverso conhecido. Curiosamente, isso pode ser ocasionado pela facilidade que esse grupo tem de se diversificar e, segundo trabalhos recentes, devido ao fato que linhagens de besouro raramente se extinguem.
