That rumor is going around again—that a male bumblebee resting on a flower is dying. But that’s most likely not true! Male bumblebees are kicked out of the nest once they mature. From then on, they live entirely outdoors—sleeping on flowers, leaves, or wherever they find shelter. It’s common to see them motionless early in the morning or during cooler weather, just warming up or resting. So if you spot one curled up on a bloom, don’t panic—he’s likely just taking a nap, not at the end of his life. Are you new here? ✨ Did you know bumblebees can feel something like happiness—and maybe even stress? 🧠💛 Research suggests bumblebees experience emotion-like states. In one study, bees given a sugar treat were more optimistic when approaching unclear situations—a behavior linked to positive mood and dopamine (Perry et al., Science, 2016). Even more adorably, another study found that bumblebees rolled wooden balls just for fun—suggesting play behavior, often tied to joy in animals (Aleman et al., Animal Behaviour, 2022). And when bees feel stressed, they groom themselves more often, like cleaning their antennae and faces—a bit like how we might fidget or self-soothe. It’s one more sign that these little creatures might feel more than we think. So next time you see a bumblebee buzzing around, remember—they might be having a whole little mood of their own. 🐝 And remember… BEE kind to your pollinators! Bumblebee Body Language 101! 🐝 This little one isn’t just waving, she’s in defensive mode! Before resorting to stinging, a bumblebee will often raise its legs in the air as a warning sign. Unlike most bees, wasps, and hornets that sting at the first sign of a threat, bumblebees are a little more laid-back and prefer to give a heads-up first. 💡 Fun fact: This move is called the Disturbance Leg-Lift Response (DLR). If you see a bumblebee doing this, or vibrating her wings, it’s best to back away, stinging is their last resort, but they’ve even been known to bite first!
