“The individual bumble bees were allowed to climb onto forceps to minimize handling stress. Individuals that did not climb onto forceps were gently grasped by the side of the thorax or legs with forceps during transfer. Hang in there! This bee behavior is called ‘festooning’ and it’s actually how honeybees work together to build a beehive. They link their legs together to form a little living chain of bees called a ‘festoon’ so that they can construct the honeycomb structure of a hive!
