Trimming asters before spring is ideal in helping the plant

Trimming asters before spring is ideal in helping the plant shape itself to a well rounded shrub to bloom in the fall. But there is still time to trim them down if you haven’t yet, infact another round of pruning in the summer will help asters to not get leggy and collapse, but maintain the round shape ready to bloom for fall. ^_^ . . Enjoy my wall of fall aster with me! This is a good example of how planting perennials in mass can make a BIG statement. This is only a grouping of four but this plant does grow big 🤣 I have three groupings of fall aster in my yard and this one is my favorite…something about the slope of the yard makes them really standout. Fall aster is also a favorite for rabbits and so they have taken out one of my groupings of three…luckily not this one! I love fall aster for north Texas gardens as well. It’s a leave it and forget perennial (aside from the potential rabbit problem) except you should cut your asters in half late spring so they do not flop over come their fall blooms. This grouping here I pruned in late May and here we are in October! Fall aster can handle our extreme heat in full sun with minimal water during dry periods. #symphyotrichumoblongifolium #fallaster #asterraydonsfavorite #gardeninspiration

Say HELLO 👋🏼 to the Calico Aster….This is one of THE best pollinator plants in our yard! Asters are an AMAZING source of late season nectar and pollen, they come up every year and they kick mum’s 🍑🤣 When I bought this astertor, it fit in a window box, and I bought it because I knew it was such a great late season plant. I had no idea it would grow into the 3’ tall bush of flower goodness that it did 💜🤍💗 I bought this 2 years ago at @oaklandnurseries 💗 #plantnative #pollinatorgarden #pollinators #bees #honeybees #bumblebeewatch #bumble #bumblebee #gardenforwildlife #flowers #flowerstagram #flowersofinstagram #asters #landscapeideas @thebutterflybelt

Perennial asters are a beautiful, long blooming flower that pair wonderfully with fall plants 💜 They are hardy in zones 5-9 but some say they can come back up to zones 3! Our favorite perennial varieties: Aster Woods - all colors New England Aster New York Aster Stokesia Colorwheel (Stokesia and Asters are the same thing) Stokesia blue Danube Stokesia Divinity Do not confuse these with the annual variety- China Aster! This variety is great for potted plants and cooler areas however, we have not had good luck with them in our zone (8a) lasting more than a week or so. #fall #fallgarden #fallgardening #garden #gardening #flowergarden #needmorefarms

Mums are an incredibly popular fall decoration, but they offer little support to North American wildlife. Since they’ve been cultivated for their showy double blooms, they produce little pollen or nectar. Also, as non-native plants, they did not co-evolve with our local ecosystems and do not serve as a host plant for our native butterflies and moths. Instead, consider planting native asters from the Symphyotrichum and Eurybia genera. These keystone species are powerhouse plants, serving as a host for dozens of butterfly and moth caterpillars and providing vital nectar for countless pollinators, including specialist bees. Be sure to select a species native to your specific region. Native asters deliver the same fall color as mums, and they return reliably year after year. They also pair incredibly well with our native goldenrods (Solidago). #asters #symphyotrichum #nativeplants #plants #native #nativeasters #mums #chrysanthemums #flowers #gardening #tips #keystoneplants #wildlife

I am so delighted to come home to the beautiful show the China Aster is putting on 😍! (However, I am not delighted by all of the deadheading and garden work that I’ve fallen behind on 🤪.) I just got home from a fun week in Texas looking at colleges with my daughter. We had the best time! I decided to stay off social media for most of my trip so I could be present and soak up the time with her and my husband. Hence my lack of posts lately. Now it’s back to work for me.

Magical combo. My favourite of autumn. Aster 'Arcturus' and Rudbeckia triloba. They're cheering up many parts of our garden now, providing the last colors of autumn here. Yesterday was the last day for this season our garden was open to visit, and we saw it in the big numbers of visitors. I think, most of them were surprised to see soo many colors, although autumn had already started. About 500 Asters together with abig bunch of this yellow beauty; Rudbeckia triloba...are bringing the big autumnal afterparty. Colorful magic. Www.grintjestuinontwerp.nl

An aster variety that makes an especially amazing cut flower

An aster variety that makes an especially amazing cut flower for blooms late summer! 😊 These are called China Asters, or “Callistephus chinensis”, an annual, which are grown from seed. Here’s some things I’ve learned growing these beauties! Sun: Full sun Spacing: 9” apart Soil: Rich, well drained Sowing: Start indoors 6 weeks before average last spring frost date. Cover seeds with 1/8 inch of soil. Plant outside as soon as you are able to in the spring (after threat of frost passes) for two reasons. 1) They do not bounce back from being root bound. 2) Flowering starts when daylight starts to lessen in late summer. This means they will bloom on whatever their current stem height is, so they really need planted out right at your last frost date to get those long stems. No pinching needed. Asters are very susceptible to a disease called “aster yellows”, spread by leafhoppers. If this is something in your area like it is in mine, keep a mesh covering over the row until the plants are too big for it. I also struggle with rust affecting mine and ruining stems (dark spots caused by a fungal disease). These have been a learning curve for me and I’m still trying to figure them out better and how to keep them happiest- I’m determined! Let me know if you have grown these and what your experience has been! 😊 Or what flower is currently giving you a headache 😂 Variety shown is called “Lady Coral Lavender” 🩶 (The black film is a corn based biodegradable film called “bio 360”- not plastic and breaks down within a season 😊) #growflowers #gardentips #backyardgarden #growyourown #gardeninspo #cottagegarden #flowerfarm

Of course I'm going to love them, they're in the same family

Of course I'm going to love them, they're in the same family as chrysanthemums 🌸 These beautiful Asters filled the gap just before my main chrysanthemum crop bloomed. Tip 🌱: I have found here that I get one good cut like in the video. They will push out more stems, but I found they are fairly weak and short after the main harvest. Tip 🌱: You can harvest the individual stems, they are just very slim. I will be trialing my asters in a new spot in the garden this year to see if i can get an extra few inches out of the individual stem length. Advanced Grower Tip 🌱: If the plants are exposed to around 5 weeks of long days in their first weeks of growing (14hrs sun), they will produce more blooms on longer stems. I am going to play around with timings and see when is best to plant here, but it will be around December that I'm aiming for them to be in ground. #asters #asterladycorallavender #flowers #cutflowers #seasonalflowers #farmerflorist #urbangarden #gardening #garden #diygarden

My favorite easy, beautiful, native food source for pollinators in late summer through fall is… ✨ASTER✨ There are TONS of different native asters—here are some good ones: -Georgia aster (endangered!) -Calico aster (spreads, good for shade) -New York Aster -White wood aster (spreads, good for shade) -Stokes aster -White heath aster The bees love asters, they bloom well into fall, and come back year after year. They are super resilient too— if they grow too tall and flop over you can chop them and they will barely notice! (Some of these “asters” are not technically actually in the aster family, but they are still great native perennials!)
