🧬 STEM TUESDAY 🧬 “Twisted Sugar” Candy Cane Bending Experiment Let your kids have fun twisting fun with candy canes to see what fun shapes they can make! Time and temperature are very important in this fun DIY experiment. Preheat those ovens to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, place your candy canes on a cookie sheet and throw them in for about 5-6 minutes. Watching carefully because you want them soft and bendy and not a puddle of hot melted sugar! ⚠️ These will be hot but my kids were able to handle them after a couple seconds. You need: 🧪Candy Canes 🧪An Oven 🧪Cookie Sheet 🧪Your Hands The science In this experiment we are seeing a few things. A physical change the candy cane remains as such but we are changing the physical appearance of the candy cane. As well as we are experiencing some molecular changes. When the candy cane is cold the sugar and other ingredients remain in a rigid structure allowing it to keep its shape. When they are warmed up you are heating up the sugar molecules and they start to move more freely allowing you to bend the candy canes. Once cooled back down again the candy cane molecules will become rigid and stay in shape! SCIENCE WITH CANDY CANES SAVE this holiday twist on the classic at-home STEM activity! ❤️🤍 TO DO: - Place candy canes on a shallow dish or plate. - Pour warm water onto the plate. - Observe! THE SCIENCE: When water is added, the sugar in the candy canes begins to dissolve. This sugar diffuses to areas where there is no sugar (the water) and the color spreads in the process! Try creating different patterns with the candy canes and watch the colors spread! If you don’t have candy canes, you can do a similar science activity using Skittles, M&Ms or other candies with a similar candy-coating.
