If you’re overwhelmed with your dog’s reactivity and you feel like you’re still struggling, comment “REACT” and we’ll send you the link to find our Reactivity webinar which offers you easy-to-follow and simple step by step training to fix your biggest issues today. Reactivity can be extremely difficult to work through-especially when EVERYONE has a different opinion on how to handle it! I like to think of reactivity as a bubble - the longer your dog stares (loads up) on a trigger the bigger the bubble gets and it's more likely to pop (barking/lunging/ pulling). You need to do things that allow the bubble to deflate (relieve pressure), the best way for that is to get distance from the trigger and rewarding for eye contact. ❌ don't ask your dog to sit when a trigger is passing. All that's doing is stopping everything so your dog can focus HARDER on the trigger! ❌ don't just yank on your dog while they stare at the trigger. This is just going to piss off an already aroused dog. (Think of drunk dudes getting in a bar fight and people trying to hold them back, it makes them want to fight MORE). ❌ don't allow your dog to get to the trigger after they pulled/lunged/barked. The majority of reactivity we see IS overly friendly reactivity- just because it's not coming from an aggressive place, doesn't mean we should reward that behavior by giving the dog what they want. ✅ do give a wide berth when passing a trigger, moving out wider and wider if your dog is still focused on the trigger. This allows you to give your dog space from the trigger while still moving past it. ✅ do turn around and walk the other direction when you think the trigger will be too much for your dog to handle. This is the least challenging way to deal with a trigger, so if you're early in your training journey with your reactive dog- start here! ✅ do back pedal when your dog focuses too much on a trigger, to allow them to reset (deflate that bubble)! 🚨in addition to these, switch your dog to the OPPOSITE side of your body, away from the trigger Focus on rewarding them when they do what you want them to, and redirect them when they get too distracted by a trigger.

As dog trainers who specialize in aggression and reactivity rehab, there’s one theme we see over and over again… And we want to set the record straight. “Reactive dogs just need to be shown that other dogs are ok” 👆 this is only half true. Yes, dogs need to learn other dogs are ok, but they don’t learn that by meeting other dogs and directly interacting with them. Reactive dogs actually need to be corrected for the act of lunging at other dogs (whether they’re friendly or not, it doesn’t matter). Step one is always stopping the arousal through a properly timed correction Step two is then exposing them to other dogs, and teaching them to be NEUTRAL. We really don’t care if dogs become best friends with other dogs- and that’s usually not our clients goals either. All we want is a dog that can be around their triggers and remain under control. Because dogs that can control their impulses are dogs that have more freedom. If you need help with beginning to train your reactive dog- comment START and we’ll send you a free course showing our first steps with training leash reactive dogs.

Dogs are always communicating — most owners just miss the signs. When your dog nudges your hand, leans into you, or sleeps near the doorway, it isn’t random behavior. 🐶 Is your dog a bratty barker? Do they bark at you for attention 🥺, food 🍲 and toys 🦴? 👍🏻 Fortunately for you, it’s easy to resolve! 1️⃣ The most important step is to ignore the barking. This can be super difficult, but the reason they’re barking is because they’ve learned it’s an effective way to get what they want. 2️⃣Teach them a cue that means quiet 🤫 Line up treats on a countertop somewhere your puppy can see it. When they’re focused on the treats, simply say “Shhhh” 🤫 and direct them to sit and watch. Then one by one, give them a treat. Soon shhh 🤫 will prompt them to sit and watch, which you reward with treats or attention. 3️⃣ Next, tuck some treats in your pockets, walk around, and the next time your puppy barks at you, simply cover your eyes. 🙈 Wait for them to stop barking, then say shhh 🤫. When they sit and look to you, pull a treat out of your pocket and reward them 🤗. 💁🏼♀️ Practice this a couple times a day for a few days and soon your dog will be responding to their new cue! - #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #puppytraining #puppytrainingtips #puppy #dog #dogbehavior #puppybehavior#puppytroubles #dogtroubles #anxiety #doganxiety

Wagging Tail Doesn’t Mean Friendly ??? Although friendly dogs will wag their tails, we must also remember that dogs showing aggression can also wag their tails, nervous dogs will also wag their tails. Why ??? It’s because a tail wagging is just excitement/adrenaline going through the body, the position of the tail, the body, the ears, the eyes it all matters when reading a dog. Assuming a tail wagging is enough as a stand alone for deciding if a dog is friendly or not has caused a great many people to get bitten. #dogtrainingadvice #dogs #caucasianshepherd #dogsofinsta #bigdogs #reactivedogs #viral

This moment looks innocent. But for a dog, food equals safety. Interrupt it, and you teach tension instead of trust. That pattern shows up later — often where people least expect it. This is how dogs slowly become labeled “aggressive,” how behavior escalates, and how some eventually end up in shelters with no options left. I work with those dogs every day. Yes, I can help them but I’d rather prevent it from ever getting this far. If you want to understand behavior before it becomes a problem, follow @lizwolting.
