Wool processing, Part 1. Terms used in the reel: Skirting: the process of taking out undesired parts of the fleece before washing Second cuts: where the blades of the shearer went over the fleece a second time, resulting in shorter bits of fleece too small to process into yarn or felt Kemp: hair or very wiry wool that will remain scratchy and doesn’t take dye very well. This is however a necessary component for the wool product Tweed. Vegetable Matter (VM) : anything plant derived that ends up in the fleece. Hay, weeds, seeds, etc. Belly wool: wool that grows on the sheeps belly. This is typically worn down so much it’s not included in wool processing but makes amazing mulch. Primitive breed: an unimproved breed that retains a lot of its old fashioned traits such as growing some hair in the fleece. Hope you enjoy!!! PART TWO OF TWO: The processing of Wool. Cleaned wool is fed from an opened bale to the hopper, which is fed to the evenfeed, which is fed into our carder to make wool batting for our pillows. Having this level of control on our wool gives us the ability to put out the absolute best.

Using Carding Brushes is a great way to start, but once you start processing bigger amounts, it’s just too time consuming and hard on the body. It used to take me literal weeks to process what I ca on this machine in 20 minutes. Besides cleaning and aligning fibers, you can als blend different types of fiber on here! Once I process all of Dollys mohair, I’ll be blending it with silk. Picker vs carder — what’s the difference? A picker opens up compacted fleece and gets it ready. A carder blends and prepares it for spinning.
