Basics of Sanatan 🕉️ Varna System The Varna system in Sanatan Dharma was a social framework based on roles and responsibilities. It broadly described four functional groups like Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra they mainly represent knowledge, protection, trade, and service. Its earliest reference appears in the Purusha Sukta of the Rigveda, where society is symbolically shown emerging from one cosmic being. Later the Upanishads moved the focus toward inner qualities, and finally in the Bhagavad Gita, Shri Krishna makes it clear that Dharma is guided by Karma and nature, not by birth. In later periods, this idea became confused and diluted with the concept of “caste.” The word caste comes from the Portuguese word castas which has a completely different meaning. Varna was originally fluid and linked to qualities and actions, not rigid identity. Sanatan ultimately teaches oneness. Roles may differ, but the same Atman exists in all.
