And the actors directors return to again and again usually share the same behaviours, regardless of style, age, or experience. Here are a few that matter more than most people realise: ✨ They listen without planning. You can feel it when an actor is genuinely available, not waiting for their next line. ✨ They adapt quickly. A note comes in and the actor adjusts without ego or panic. That flexibility is priceless on set and in rehearsal. ✨ They stay grounded under pressure. Just simple things that worked. 1️⃣ I sent off for an open casting with zero idea what I was doing or how the industry worked. No agent, no expectations. I just followed the instructions and hoped for the best… and she booked it. That first professional credit really helped when we applied to agents later. I always recommend aiming for representation long term, but this was a great starting point. 2️⃣ I made sure I read the briefs… twice. It’s not just about filming a tape. It’s about spotting the clues that help your child show up as the character. 3️⃣ When the brief was vague, we sometimes sent two takes. When in doubt, we sent two, just in case one felt closer to what they were looking for. I figured if I wasn’t sure which version to send… maybe they weren’t either. 4️⃣ I didn’t know what I didn’t know, so I learned. Some things worked, some didn’t. But every bit of research helped us take the next step with more confidence. Most parents stay stuck in this trial-and-error phase for years simply because no one has ever shown them a clearer path. 5️⃣ I didn’t panic when we heard “no.” The industry is full of them. Here are 10 BIG signs: 1. Telling actors how to feel. If you say “be more depressed,” just go home. Actors need verbs, not adjectives. Give them a goal to achieve, not an emotion to fake. Results-oriented directing is the fastest way to get a plastic performance. 2. Having zero “North Star.” If you don’t have a clear through-line, your crew is just guessing. If you don’t know the point of the scene, how is the DP supposed to know where to put the light? 3. Being “too busy” to eat. The “starving artist” trope is exhausting. Eat a bagel. Nobody wants to work for a director who is one minor inconvenience away from a “hangry” meltdown. 4. Glued to the monitor. Video Village is a trap. If you spend the whole day in a tent 20 feet away, you aren’t directing—you’re spectating. Get in there and feel the air in the room. 5. Thinking you’re “above” playback. If you don’t check the footage, don’t cry when you get to the edit and realize the boom mic was in the shot or the focus was soft. Ego doesn’t fix bad takes. 6. Projecting your panic. We’re all sweating it, but if you’re vibrating with anxiety and asking everyone “if we’re okay,” you’re killing the vibe. Fake the confidence until the wrap bell rings. 7. Acting like a dictator. It’s a film set, not a monarchy. You’re the captain of the ship, but the ship doesn’t move without the engineers. Lead the project; don’t rule it. 8. Forgetting you’re a human being. If you don’t take “artist dates” to touch grass and reset, your work will get stale. Go sit in the woods for an hour. Your script will thank you. 9. Being a Film School hater. Dismissing film school is a mid-tier personality trait. A lot of the pros holding your reflectors spent four years learning the “why” behind the “how.” Respect the hustle. 10. Forgetting to actually enjoy this. You’re making movies, not performing open-heart surgery. Lighten up. If you’re miserable on set, it’ll show up on screen. 1. Go Faster: A lot of young actors slow down too much. Real people talk fast, especially with friends. Speeding up keeps it real and stops you from overthinking. 2. Know Your Lines Cold, Then Forget Them: Basically, know the material so well that it’s second nature—like saying your name—so you can focus on the emotion and not on getting every word perfect. We’re not here for perfect lines; we’re here for real moments. 3. Don’t “Act”—Just Be: The best acting often looks like no acting at all. If your character’s out of breath, do something that actually gets you out of breath. If they’re supposed to be in pain, find a way to physically feel something small. It’s about removing the pretending and making it real for you. 4. Turn Up the Real You: Instead of showing what you think a shy or mean character looks like, find that part of yourself that actually feels that way and just amplify it.
