Day 11 of posting until someone notices. My dad built this castle 30 years ago. Now it’s falling apart — and I’m trying to restore his legacy with my own hands. I’m documenting the entire restoration step by step — doing as much as I can myself, and sharing the full journey here. I don’t have enough money to do it alone. Country house ruin in the landscape. Clifden Castle was built in 1815 by Mr John D’Arcy for his beloved wife Louisa. They had eight children and this was their family home. Mr D’Arcy founded the nearby town of Clifden which continues to thrive to this day. The potato famine of the 1840s left the family unable to maintain the estate. It was sold in 1850. Purchased by the Eyre Family, it was used as a retreat from town life through to 1894 when John Joseph Eyre died. A trust was set up to administer the estate however without a single owner, it fell into disrepair eventually ruin. The contents auctioned off and the roof, windows, timber, and lead stripped away. It stands like sentinel in the landscape overlooking the Atlantic ocean. Perhaps one day, this great house and estate will be restored as a family home?

Dunalastair House is 166 years old in 2025, as it was completed in 1859.
