Croft Castle has over 1,000 years of history, and was noted in the Domesday book in 1086. The gardens at Croft Castle grew slowly, shaped by enclosure rather than display. Stone walls create shelter and warmth, while open lawns, orchards, and planted borders reflect a garden designed for use as much as beauty. Unlike more formal landscapes, Croft’s gardens evolved alongside the house — practical, adaptable, and deeply domestic. Croft Castle is a beautifully scenic countryside walk, with woodland trails, historic parkland, and peaceful views across the Herefordshire landscape 🐶 Set on the English–Welsh border, this historic estate spans 1,500 acres of ancient trees, farmland, and rolling parkland. There are several waymarked routes to choose from, we followed the Fishpool Dingle walk, which winds through woodland and next to a picturesque crystal clear pools. 🅿️ Parking: There’s a main car park on site with easy access to the grounds and facilities, including a café if you want to grab a takeaway coffee before heading out. From there, you can head straight onto the estate, with multiple paths leading through parkland and into the surrounding woodland. These paths vary in lengths and difficulties 🌲 The walk itself is gentle and beautifully varied, with shaded woodland trails, open areas, and sections that feel peaceful once you move away from the castle. There’s plenty to explore, with lots of natural sniff spots along the way. Some parts of the Fishpool Dingle route are narrower, which can make passing others a little trickier. 🐑 Dogs are welcome across the estate, but due to grazing livestock, they are required to be kept on lead. When we visited at the weekend, there were quite a few off-lead dogs despite the rules, which reactive dogs may find challenging. However, none of these dogs approached us. Visiting during the week or choosing quieter paths may offer a more relaxed experience. It’s still a lovely countryside walk with beautiful scenery, just something to keep in mind if your dog needs a bit more space. Half Term at Croft Castle There’s so much to do … explore the Ghost Tree Trail which covers over 4 miles but can be shortened for tiring legs. Then closer to the castle there’s the delightful Gnome Trail which the kids will love finding the all the clues. Follow this with lunch in the cafe, before heading up to the natural playground for rope swings and den building. Finish off your day exploring the castle and finding all the hidden mice! Brilliant.
