Your cat comes and sits right next to you. But instead of facing you, they turn around and face the other direction. Their back is literally to you. You might think they’re ignoring you. Being aloof. Not really interested in your company. But here’s what this actually means: they trust you completely. In the animal world, turning your back on someone makes you vulnerable. You can’t see what’s behind you. You can’t defend yourself from that direction. When your cat sits with their back to you, they’re saying: “I don’t need to watch you. I know you won’t hurt me.” It’s one of the highest trust signals a cat can give. They’re also doing something else: guarding you. By facing outward, your cat is watching for potential threats while you’re together. They’ve got your back — literally. This is pack behavior. In multi-cat colonies, cats often sit back-to-back so each one can watch a different direction. Your cat is treating you like a trusted colony member. If your cat always faces you and never turns their back, that can actually indicate they’re still slightly on guard around you. They haven’t fully relaxed into trust yet.
