The funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday 2025 at age 88, was held on April 26, 2025, in St. Peter’s Square, attended by roughly 250,000 people and 130+ foreign delegations. Led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the ceremony featured a simplified, largely Latin, Catholic Mass. He was buried in the Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome, a departure from traditional Vatican burials. This video shows how the private ritual for the closing of Pope Francis’ coffin took place. The casket was closed on the evening of April 25 Archbishop Diego Giovanni Ravelli placed a white silk veil over the late pope’s face. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlengo, presided over the rite of the closing and sealing of the coffin, which was attended by cardinals of the Roman Curia, the pope’s secretaries, and several of his relatives.
