Luther never intended to destroy the Roman Catholic Church or found sects. His central goal was to reform the Church itself from within, correcting abuses and doctrinal errors that distanced the people from God and the true Gospel. In his words and actions, Luther sought to restore the centrality of Christ and God's grace, calling the Church to repentance and fidelity to the Scriptures. The break with Rome only occurred because his proposals were rejected and he was excommunicated. Even so, Luther never wanted a division; he wanted the Church to return to the light of the Gospel, freeing itself from the "darkness" of corruption and doctrinal deviation.
