Step 7 How I Cut Dovetails After chopping away the waste I like to go back to the vice. I start by paring down my outside shoulders to the baseline. Then I check that my cuts were perpendicular to the face of the board and do what is needed to fix any issues there. I also make sure that there is no hump in the middle of what I chopped. Depending on the size of the dovetail, sharpness of the chisel, type of wood sometimes the center of the waste will tear out a bit. I would much prefer to be shallow in the middle then a hump which could reveal gaps on the face when glued up. For a small project like this I don’t use my router plane but for bigger projects I do. I thought I would show the process with the router plane set to the baseline and checking for any outstanding wood. Thanks for watching. It's hard to tell via the video but the difference in the quality of the factory grind is pretty significant. Also the micro piting in the unsharpened steel is drastic. The Richter Chisels were high and tight. The sorby not so much. Much more testing g to do and have ordered some special testing equipment.
