The Super Mario Bros. 2 version included in Super Mario All-Stars is a remake of the original 1988 NES game, updated for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. While the core gameplay, characters, and level design remain faithful to the original release, the All-Stars version enhances the presentation and audio using the improved capabilities of the SNES hardware. The most noticeable upgrades are visual. Character sprites, enemies, and environments were completely redrawn with brighter colors, smoother animations, and more detailed backgrounds. The dreamlike setting of Subcon appears more vibrant, and environmental elements such as waterfalls, sand, vegetation, and nighttime stages were enhanced while preserving the original artistic style. Audio was also improved in the remake. The soundtrack was rearranged using the SNES sound hardware, resulting in fuller instrumentation and clearer sound effects while maintaining the familiar melodies composed for the original game.
