For me, the best desk layout is one that can be easily rearranged for different classroom activities such as Socratic seminars or group projects. In a job where so much can feel loud, rushed, and overstimulating, I’ve learned how much the feeling of a room matters. Cozy doesn’t mean Pinterest-perfect—it means calm, safe, and welcoming. Here’s what helps my classroom feel that way: 1️⃣ Natural light whenever possible. If the sun is out, the blinds are open. Natural light instantly softens the room and makes everything feel more peaceful. 2️⃣ Overhead lights off (when we can). Those fluorescents are… a lot. Lamps and window light make the room feel calmer for everyone—me included. 3️⃣ Fabric over non-essential shelves. Covering shelves cuts down on visual clutter and makes the room feel less busy. Out of sight, out of overstimulation! 4️⃣ Seasonal picture books as decor. Pretty, seasonal books on my board = functional and cozy. Bonus points for creating curiosity before we even open them! 5️⃣ A “real” rug instead of a school one. My school didn’t have the budget for a new classroom rug for me this year—but they did let me pick out a cute 8x10 rug on sale on Amazon, and I’m SO glad I did. It makes the room feel warmer, more grounded, and honestly… more like home. Little choices add up.
