Im a fan of teaching the hang clean first, before pulling from the floor. Try 2-3 sets of 2-3 reps each and see how much it helps your form. Use the RDL to solidify the hinge. Clean Pull to teach intent and hip drive. High pull to teach intent and timing with the arms. Muscle clean helps ingrain the catch and coordinate the arms for the most difficult part of the lift. If you start pulling with your arms during the first pull, you lose power from your legs and hips, forcing you into an inefficient bar path. Instead, your arms should stay straight until after full extension—only bending at the right time to guide the barbell up. To fix this mistake, try this simple drill: 🔹 Pause at High Hang • Start your clean as normal, keeping your elbows straight through the first pull. • As the bar passes your knees and reaches pocket level, pause for 2 seconds in the high hang position. • From there, explode up, extend fully, then pull yourself under the bar. ✅ Why This Works: • Forces you to keep your arms relaxed & straight during the pull. • Develops better timing for the second pull. • Helps engrain proper technique to make your cleans stronger and more efficient. They are a very taxing movement & technique/ positional breakdown is likely if you are not proficient in Olympic lifting.
