My biggest tip for finishing your first draft? Give yourself permission to be imperfect. Stop comparing your first draft to the books on your shelf—those authors didn’t whip that book out in one go. All authors had to start with a first draft, and most of the time that first draft needed a TON of extra love and editing. But you can’t edit what you haven’t written.

My secret revising weapon, all yours ⬇️ What my math professor said about numbers ABSOLUTELY applies to revising your first draft! Here’s the thing: yeah, your work is great, but she’s got some plot holes, inconsistencies, general grammar mistakes… Ok, she’s a fixer upper BUT massaging your work—aka rewriting line by line—is the best way to incorporate these notes in a way that flows. 📝 It’s the difference between spot cleaning a dirty dress and throwing it in the washer. Yeah, it takes longer, but incorporating all those details you missed while massaging those words into shape leads to more supple, organic prose. ☺️ Don’t believe me? I didn’t either at first, so try this: Massage your favorite chapter OR your first chapter. Rewrite it line by line. 👀 Odds are, you’ve grown as a writer since the drafting phase! I’m slowly saying goodbye to the first draft as I completely rewrite it. If you’re writing your first draft, don’t get down on yourself about it not being perfect. It’s a rite of passage, honestly.

if you have a ton of drafts, what that tells me is this thing matters to you. you took the time to create something. multiple things, actually. but you don’t take yourself seriously enough to share it with the world. now for some people, it may not be that deep. you’re just here to chill and have fun, and that’s fine. but if that’s not you… if deep down you know this means more to you than you’re letting on… then please, don’t let your drafts be where your dreams go to die. since nothing else has worked, i’ve resorted to singing.
