We could all use a little more bear energy in our lives. 😌🌲 Did you know? 🐾 Grizzly bears actually spend about 16-20 hours a day resting or sleeping outside of hyperphagia (when they bulk up for winter). 🌞 They love sunny clearings, fallen logs, and shady slopes to nap in peace. 🧠 Despite their size, grizzlies are highly intelligent and emotionally complex animals. Relaxing is part of their stress regulation. 🍃 When they feel safe and unthreatened, you’ll often see them rolling around, scratching their backs on trees, or just sitting… like this. I’m baaack! Timberdoodles, AKA American woodcock are on their singing grounds! Listen for their toad-like “peent . . . peent . . .” call in woodland clearings or open fields next to brush or woods. Watch for the male’s remarkable “sky dance,” where he takes off and spirals upward 200-300 feet on twittering wings, sounding a liquid warbling song as he reaches the top of his flight. Then he silently drops back to earth. The Game Commission manages different habitat types for woodcock, specifically, creating a mosaic of shrub thickets, young forest, and small clearings on suitable soils. The Nkuhuma female with her two cubs have spent the last few weeks around the open clearings around Dulini River and Leadwood and are becoming a regular favourite amongst our guides. This lone female has done a great job in raising these cubs through their first year- the only litter sired by the Plains Camp males in the area.
