Public service is the backbone of Cleveland. It is the daily work, often unseen, that keeps our city running and our communities cared for. Today, we honor that commitment through the story of Gerald Moore. For 54 years, Gerald Moore has served the people of Cleveland. He began in April 1972 as a Municipal Service Laborer, and through decades of hard work and dedication, he rose to lead as Ground Maintenance Unit Leader at the Johnston Parkway Station. His career spans generations of Clevelanders, and his impact lives in the parks, public spaces, and neighborhoods he helped care for every single day. Mr. Moore, on behalf of the City of Cleveland, thank you. Thank you for more than five decades of service. Thank you for the example you set for all of us. And thank you for leaving this city better than you found it.

East Cleveland didn’t just decline, it was a hit!🤨🗣️ When people complain about EC today, they ignore how it started. The government basically drew a circle around neighborhoods and told the banks “Don’t Loan Here” and they systematically devalued Black communities. Then you had white flight where all the white people moved out if these areas, taking the bulk if the tax revenue with them. Such a bad guy I didn’t even mention anything he actually did in the offices he was elected to. I’m going to talk about a research thing that frustrated me, if that’s not interesting to you, I totally understand. While researching this video I found a letter from Cleveland to a voter who had written because the voter thought that Cleveland had desegregated schools in New York and the voter disapproved. Cleveland responded to the voter saying that actually, the exact opposite had happened, some people had wanted to desegregate and Cleveland stopped it. The frustrating part came next when Cleveland claimed that the official in charge of the New York schools for Black children, himself a Black man, had told Cleveland that segregation would be better for the Black students. This isn’t impossible, but it sounded unlikely. I was able to find information about the school official (Professor Charles L. Reason) and found that he was politically active and advocated for rights for Black people, which wasn’t surprising. But I couldn’t find anything about him and school desegregation specifically, so even though I feel in my gut that Cleveland was lying or misrepresenting things when he portrayed Professor Reason as pro-segregation, I didn’t feel confident enough to say that in the video.
