The Internet went down. Again. And this time… it wasn’t AWS. It wasn’t Azure. It was Cloudflare. On November 18th, around 5 PM in India, huge parts of the Internet blinked out. OpenAI, Twitter/X, a bunch of SaaS tools… even some status pages and outage trackers struggled to load. So what actually happened? Cloudflare has been rewriting its core stack in Rust — the “safe”, modern systems language that’s supposed to eliminate entire classes of bugs. But the outage came down to something brutally simple: • A configuration file for Bot Management got bloated after a database/metadata change • That file was pushed across Cloudflare’s new Rust-based proxy • The Rust code hit an unexpected error condition • And instead of handling it gracefully, the logic basically said: “If this ever fails… just crash.” Rust did do its job on memory safety. What failed was error handling, assumptions, and guardrails around config. The lesson? You can “rewrite it in Rust”… but if you’re still vibecoding in production, you’re one bad config away from taking the Internet down. #ai #vibecoding #cloudflare
