This is one of the biggest failures in nursing education right now. There are four types of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses: Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Nurse Midwife, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist. Most nursing programs spend entire semesters on the NP track and barely mention CNS. Some don’t mention it at all. Students graduate thinking NP is the only option for advanced practice and they’ve never even heard of the role that drives evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and systems-level change in hospitals. If your program didn’t teach you about CNS, it’s not your fault. But now you know. And if you love research, EBP, teaching, and improving systems more than you love managing a patient panel….
