Do you know who statistically the best coaches in the world are? Recent research analyzed what separates elite coaches from everyone else, and the answer is going to challenge everything you think you know about coaching success. It is not the ones with the most experience, it is not the ones with the best credentials, it is not even the ones who were the best athletes themselves. The best coaches have one trait that predicts success more than anything else: supportive behaviors. Not toughness, not discipline, supportive behaviors. They use positive reinforcement, active listening, and constructive feedback, research shows this strongly correlates with team resilience and collective efficacy. They use democratic leadership styles, they do not dictate, they collaborate, studies show democratic leadership positively predicts athlete engagement far more than authoritarian styles. The best coaches have emotional intelligence: self-awareness, empathy, interpersonal skills, they adapt to diverse personalities and ignite performance through understanding, not intimidation. The coaches who fail are not less knowledgeable, they just lack the emotional intelligence to connect, the humility to collaborate, and the patience to support instead of control. NEVER SAY THIS TO A D1 COACH 👇 One of the biggest mistakes players make during the recruiting process happens in the first 10 seconds of a call with a college coach. They start the conversation focused entirely on themselves. “Are you recruiting my position?” “Do you have spots available?” “Can you watch my highlights?” From a coach’s perspective, this shows two problems immediately: • The player didn’t research the program • The player expects the coach to lead the conversation College coaches speak with hundreds of players every year. The ones who stand out are the athletes who come prepared. Before getting on a call with a coach, every player should: • Understand the team’s style of play • Know the coach’s expectations for their position • Have thoughtful questions prepared A simple shift in how you start the conversation can completely change how that coach views you as a recruit. I started coaching to validate my own experience. I was doing new stuff in my life. Learning new things. People were noticing. People were asking me questions. And then, they were asking me if I coached!! It felt good to be recognized. To have my progress validated. Here’s why this isn’t sustainable. What happens when your own progress and identity in the work you do is tied to your clientele and whether or not they’re hiring you? A lot of things can happen. You get desperate.
