🚰 Le chlorure de vinyle monomère (CVM), une substance gazeuse cancérogène, contamine depuis des années l’eau potable transportée dans des canalisations en PVC vieillissantes. En collectant les données des différentes sources disponibles, Vert a identifié plus de 5 500 communes concernées et réalisé la première carte de France en la matière. 🚧 Au total, en France, entre 140 000 à 340 000 kilomètres de canalisations sont concernés par une contamination au CVM, d’après le ministère de la santé et les délégataires de service public d’eau, soit entre 3,5 et 8,5 fois le tour de la Terre. ☠️ Le CVM est classé cancérogène certain pour l’humain depuis 1987 par le Centre international de recherche sur le cancer (CIRC). Il est responsable de cancers du foie : l’angiosarcome hépatique et le carcinome hépatocellulaire (ou hépatocarcinome). Des études montrent qu’une exposition chronique au CVM augmente le risque lié à ces maladies. 💸 S’il fallait remplacer l’ensemble des canalisations concernées, cela coûterait probablement entre 12,6 et 30,6 milliards d’euros, selon les estimations du Monde. 💦 Le ministère de la santé préconise aujourd’hui de continuer à utiliser une eau contaminée au CVM pour le brossage des dents ou le lavage des légumes. Mais, pour se désaltérer ou préparer des recettes de cuisine, elle recommande l’eau en bouteille.
