College expectations vs. reality incoming freshman need to know! Expectation: You’ll have lots of free time. Reality: A lot of your time gets taken up by studying, life tasks, and other commitments. Your schedule fills up quickly with study groups, research papers, and exam prep. You have to add in time for cooking, laundry, grocery shopping, and working a part-time job to cover expenses. Expectation: You’ll have no problem focusing in the library. Reality: The campus library can get packed, especially during midterms and finals. The quiet floors aren’t always quiet, with constant distractions from whispers and keyboards. Try coffee shops, the quad, empty classrooms, or the dining hall during off hours for alternative study spots that might offer better focus conditions. Expectation: You’ll be best friends with your roommate. Reality: Most roommate relationships fall somewhere between acquaintances and friendly coexistence. You’ll develop systems for sharing space and respect each other’s boundaries, but friendship isn’t guaranteed. It’s also common to have bad roommates who you dislike. Differences in sleep schedules, cleanliness, or social habits can cause frequent tension. Expectation: Professors won’t know who you are in large lecture halls. Reality: If you make the effort, you can get to know them pretty well. Professors appreciate students who engage during class, go to office hours, and show genuine interest. Many go out of their way to support students who put in effort. With the days of early verbal commitments in the past, limited roster sizes, and transfer portal options which have coaches leaning towards older players, there is virtually no reason to travel the country playing in tournaments before your sophomore year.
